Born on 8th October 1878 from old East Anglian farming stock, Sir Alfred Munnings was to become one of the greatest equine artists of all time. A number of his paintings hang in the Jockey Club Rooms including two of the Eclipse winner, Buchan, as well as the Fillies' Triple Crown winner, Sun Chariot. There is also a striking portrait of the great jockey, Steve Donoghue, which was completed after a single sitting three days after Donoghue had won the Derby on Humorist. Thirty years later, the artist still thought it to be one of the best portraits he ever painted.
