Diomed won the first ever running of The Derby in 1780 but sadly there are no details of his eight defeated opponents. He won eight of sixteen starts and retired to stud in England where he was regarded as a failure. Remarkably, he was sold to the USA aged twenty where he became an enormous success surviving to the grand old age of thirty and becoming forefather to many of the best horses there including Lexington who was champion sire fourteen times running.
Champion trainers Richard Hannon and Sir Michael Stoute need little introduction. Both have trained numerous top class horses for Highclere with the latter being responsible for our first classic winner Petrushka who won The Kildangan Stud Irish Oaks in 2000. Both trainers have had another great season with Richard once again training over one hundred winners in a season - something that he has achieved a staggering sixteen times.
