With John Warren unable to attend the sale in France, Peter Doyle (who buys all of Richard Hannon's horses) bought this lovely filly on behalf of Highclere at the Arqana St Cloud sale in the Spring. Peter was very excited about this filly who had breezed particularly well and she really is the most lovely individual who has plenty of size and strength about her. She also has a good pedigree being out of the winning Gone West mare, Lady Salsa, whose mother, Chicarica, won the Chesham Stakes (Listed) at Royal Ascot as well as the Cherry Hinton Stakes (Gr 3) at the July Meeting. Cape Cross, is one of the leading stallions standing at stud in Europe and is responsible for last year's great racehorse, Sea the Stars, as well as Ouija Board and many others.
Abdicate put up a really pleasing debut performance at Beverley on 28th August. She handled the preliminaries very calmly and loaded quietly into the stalls. She was a little slowly away so Paul Mulrennan dropped her in behind horses and she ran in a very settled manner. Despite being at the back of the field, at the two furlong marker Abdicate picked up and made eye-catching progress through the field although through greeness and a few traffic problems, she could not quite get up to win but was only beaten a length into fourth.
