With John Warren unable to attend the sale in France, Peter Doyle (who buys Richard Hannon’s horses) purchased this lovely colt on behalf of Highclere at the Spring Arqana St Cloud sale. He was keen to buy a son of Zamindar from a very good family, as the horse had impressed him both physically and whilst breezing. Zamindar has produced a multitude of top class performers including Zarkava (Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1)), Darjina (Prix d’Astarte (Gr 1)), Coquerelle (Prix Saint Alary (Gr 1)) and Zenda. This colt’s dam, She is Zen, has produced the very useful Handsome Hawk, who won six races including the Swedish Derby and over 260,000 euros in prizemoney. She is a half sister to the Group 1 winner Execute who won the Prix Ganay. Dictionary is a strong, precocious sort who looks as though he will be ready to run in early August. He is eligible for the Racing Post Breeze Up bonus races and is also qualified for owner’s premiums in France.
Dictionary hated the ground on his debut at Newmarket on 14th August and, as a result, Jamie Spencer looked after the horse. He behaved well beforehand and was the first to load up without any fuss. Having broken well, Jamie settled Dictionary in behind the leaders and initially he seemed to be travelling reasonably well. However, he began to wander around and it soon became clear that he wasn't handling the heavy ground. Having made some headway in the middle of the race, Jamie quite rightly decided to nurse the horse home without asking any questions. He is sure to come on for this run mentally and physically and, on better ground, we will see a much better performance next time.
Unfortunately following Newmarket debut, Dictionary met with a training setback and will not be seen on the racecourse again until next year.
