We bought a really lovely colt by the successful young American sire ‘Tapit’ at the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale. Baptist cost 42,000 Guineas and is an imposing colt who should be mature enough to be making his debut towards the end of July or early August. Baptist boasts a good pedigree on the dam's side being out of the multiple winning and Listed placed mare 'Twist A Lime' and he is also a half brother to the very useful Group 2 winner 'Speed Gun'. Interestingly, another half-brother won two races at two in this country and was Listed placed so purely from a pedigree perspective, this son of Tapit has plenty going for him.
Baptist was in full exercise by the end of June having settled down completely and appears totally relaxed in his surroundings. Andrew and his team have done a great job in bringing this about by warming him up on his own before rejoining the string on the hill. He is an easy moving animal who covers a great deal of ground and it is encouraging that the trainer feels that he can get on with this horse. By the end of July Jimmy Fortune rode him in an easy piece of work; he liked the horse a great deal but felt that he was still a shade on the weak side so all being well, he will be more likely to get onto the track early in September.
Having watched Baptist work very nicely on the Peat Moss Gallop with Jimmy Fortune, he is now ready to make his debut so Andrew will look for a suitable opportunity during early September. Baptist is so relaxed both before and after his exercise and it is pretty clear that whatever he does this year he will improve considerably upon as he gets stronger and fills to his frame.
