First season sire Holy Roman Empire was the top rated two year old in Europe in 2006 before retiring to stud due to injury. This flashy looking colt really does look to be a very precocious two year old in the making. Like many of the sharper types at this time of year he has got a real bloom to his skin and he appears to be taking his exercise very easily. It was interesting to hear that Aidan O’Brien was very excited about his Holy Roman Emperors describing them as “precocious, strong and hardy, like their Dad – they look an exciting bunch”.
Numeral ran very well to finish second to Richard Hannon’s other runner, Avonmore Star, at Goodwood on 22nd May. It was frustrating to have to watch Numeral trapped behind horses with nowhere to go and Avonmore Star got first run, having been drawn wide. Pat Dobbs did not give the horse a hard race when he realised that he had no chance of winning and hopefully he will go one better next time.
Unfortunately since Goodwood Numeral met with a training setback and came back to Highclere Stud for a period of recuperation before resuming horsewalker exercise. In early August, Numeral was given the all clear by the vets to start walking exercise; he will move to Malcolm Bastard’s yard during the month and will walk for one month before being reassessed.
