Martyr has become a very popular horse with the owners in the Delilah syndicate. This consistent performer, who is now five years old, has improved every year he has been in training. In 2009 he achieved back to back victories at Windsor and Newmarket before finishing third in a highly competitive handicap at Epsom on Derby day. Martyr had by then earned his place in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and showed further improvement to finish third. He then suffered a setback but has since fully recovered and was back in action in early 2010.
Martyr ran a very respectable race in the Ebor at York on 18th August but was never able to get into the best position in the straight to be competitive. Despite breaking well, he lost his place and was shuffled back around the four furlong marker. As they swung into the straight he began to improve his position and in fact looked as though he would have every chance of winning but he was soon beaten and Richard Hughes was easy on him in the last couple of furlongs.
We will now look to run him next in The Fenwolf Stakes (Listed) at Ascot on Saturday 26th September.
